Real-Life Communication -- Solution

Before beginning your complete hearing evaluation on this new patient, you notice that he has difficulty understanding what you say to him, even though you are in a quiet environment. However, you find that when leaning in close to him, he is able to pick up some of what you say to him.

Before beginning your testing, you deduce that he might have a moderate hearing loss. Patients with this level of hearing loss will usually have a hard time understanding conversations. This is made even more difficult when there is a lot of background noise.

After seeing an audiologist, Alison Grimes says that patients understand the problem and eventually end up in better shape.

"They, either through hearing aids or cochlear implants or counseling, they find that they're able to communicate better," says Grimes
