Real-Life Math

You are refereeing a high school football game. Throughout the course of the game, you have to do mathematical calculations in your head. The math is not difficult. In fact, it is very simple, but you have to do it in your head and you are often under stress at the time.

The ball is on the 27-yard line. You have a 15-yard penalty towards the goal line. The rules say that you can only take the ball half the distance to the goal.

Can you take the penalty?
