Real-Life Communication -- Solution

You could try any number of approaches. For instance, you could say:

  1. Is how you are acting right now the way everyone on your team should be acting?
  2. Are you being a good leader right now?
  3. How would you like it if someone from the other team was doing the things you are doing right now?

You might also go to another player on Don's team and say, "Are you going to let Don cost your team a penalty? Are his emotions more important than the welfare of the team?"

"I wouldn't just tell him he's wrong. I'd want him to see for himself that his actions are wrong. But sometimes you have to ask them to settle down," says Jeff Hilyer, a high school football referee.

"It's when you help a player to demonstrate good leadership that you know you have made a difference."
