Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution
You rule in favor of the red team.
Nothing happens and the red team's coach looks satisfied.
However, the coach has learned that if he shouts at you long enough, you
will be intimidated and will rule in his favor. From that time onwards, the
coach gives you a very hard time at every game. Even when you rule according
to your own judgment, other people speculate that you are afraid of the coach.
In time, none of the coaches want you to referee their games, not even
the coach that you tried to appease. They say that if you will cheat for one
team, you will cheat for another. They really want referees to
be impartial, no matter how much people complain during a game.
"The right answer is always to do the right thing," says Jeff Hilyer, a
high school football referee. "That's where integrity comes in. I'm
there to be impartial and to be a positive role model for the young people."
