Ski and Snowboard Technician

Real-Life Activities

Real-Life Math

Bill and a crew of people bring in a pile of skis and snowboards that they need tuned and repaired for their ski vacation.

You carefully write down the repairs that need to be done, and also record each person's weight, skiing ability, and preferred stance on the snowboards.

"Math is important," says Jason James, a snowboard technician. "You have to adjust the bindings at different angles for the front foot and back foot on a board. You also have to figure out the best distance between the front and back foot."

"You need to set up the bindings correctly," agrees Leah Wahl, a ski technician.

After sorting through the skis and boards, this is what you determine needs to be done:

  • 5 sets of skis need a hot wax
  • 2 sets of skis need a basic tune-up
  • 1 snowboard needs a hot wax
  • 3 snowboards need a basic tune-up
  • 1 set of skis needs an edge repair
  • 1 set of skis needs a delamination repair
  • 2 sets of skis need stone grinding

Prices:

  • Stone grind: $29
  • Skis basic tune-up: $19
  • Snowboard basic tune-up: $25
  • Ski hot wax: $5
  • Snowboard hot wax: $8
  • Edge repair: $40
  • Delamination repair: $20

Because it's such a large order, you give Bill a 10 percent discount on the price. How much will it cost Bill to get the repairs and tune-ups done?
