You forget the cheaper repair because it hasn't been tried before, and recommend the more expensive repair.

After all, you don't want to try a new repair and have it fail.

The customer says he just can't afford that repair cost. Eventually he leaves the repair shop with his broken board in his hands. As he leaves, your boss enters the door.

"He didn't want that fixed?" he asks you. And you explain the problem.

"Of course riveting would work," he says. "You should have at least told him about the option."

"A customer can get really stoked out [depressed] if you can't help them," says James. "If they've blown out a board, that's when they come to you. You have to try and do something to repair their board."
