Real-Life Communication -- Solution

Try saying something like this:

Thanks for coming in, I appreciate your time. I think you know why you're here. It has to do with your absences.

If you want to talk about this, we can, but I want to let you know this is the first warning for you. I'm sure things will improve from here, but I'll just let you know what can happen if they don't.

First, there's another warning. Then if there's no improvement, there's a suspension without pay. If there's still no improvement after that, then you would be fired. However, I'm sure this isn't going to happen, because I know how important your job is to you.

I wanted to make sure you are clear on this and I hope you'll work on your absences. If you have any questions, just go ahead and ask.

This is how labor relations negotiator Sandi Jackson would handle it. "You have to be very careful about how you resolve issues, so people don't get upset," she says. "I can see this being a major concern in this day and age. You have to be prepared to explain things to people on their level as well."
