Real-Life Communication

As chief knowledge officer, you go through all sorts of information in a given day, whether it is written materials, information on websites or the latest in computer programming and technology.

The executive board of your company has asked you to write a summary of a new knowledge management program that will be used in your offices around the world in order to accurately and efficiently pool information so that everyone can use it.

Below you will find technical information on the new program called Intraspect 1.5. You will use it to answer the following questions about the new program.

Information on Intraspect 1.5 from Information Week Labs Doculabs

Of the products we tested, Intraspect is one of the best designed for knowledge management applications. It creates a "group memory" by storing information in maps customized to each user.

The program's design assumes most of the users are people who will both contribute to the group memory and use information.

It's logical that the Intraspect server is designed around email. Every piece of information has an email address. When you send information to the knowledge base, it appears on a user's desktop in a holding area called The Collection Bin. A user can add items from the bin into any of the folders in her personal knowledge hierarchy or set of contexts.

Intraspect integrates with common desktop applications such as those in Microsoft Office or Lotus Notes. Integration of external files, though, is not foolproof. For example, if a file or URL is moved, it's not tracked by the system.

Questions:

  1. Will the new program be compatible with the systems the company uses now?
  2. Can anyone who has the program downloaded on their computer get information out as well as put information in?
  3. Is there anything I should be wary of or careful about when I use this program?
