Real-Life Math

You hum along to the music. For the past week, you have been sorting through a number of different selections of music, trying to choose just the right one for a student to use at an upcoming skating exhibition.

Now that you have the music, you are beginning to work out the choreography and footwork for the selection. "We don't really have to use math all that much on the job," says Joanne Canow, a figure skating coach. "We have to have basic music theory, the understanding of rhythm and timing. We have to be able to put steps to music."

You have 4 compulsory jumps that you want to put in the routine. Each of these moves takes 6 seconds to complete. You need 10 seconds for a spin. For a footwork combination, you think you will need 2 more seconds than is needed for a spin. You have 1 minute and 4 seconds for the entire piece.

  1. If you put in all these moves, how many extra seconds do you have?
  2. With this remaining time, how many more jumps could you put into the program?
