Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You continue pushing and convincing Alanna to compete.

She has so much talent that you don't want it to go to waste. Besides, she is just a child, how could she know what she wants?

You lengthen Alanna's practice time and push her to improve her figures. At first, she responds well and learns quickly. It looks as though she will be ready for the first test. But suddenly, Alanna's interest drops off. She doesn't even want to go one the ice. You ask her why.

"You are trying to push me to compete. I don't want to do that. You keep pushing me and making it no fun. I want to quit," she says.

"You have to think over every decision and think about what is in the best interest of the child," says Joanne Canow, a figure skating coach. "Sometimes this can get lost. You don't want to take the enjoyment out of the sport."
