Figure Skating Coach

Real-Life Activities

Real-Life Math -- Solution

You are a figure skating coach working out a figure skating routine for one of your students. This is what you have come up with so far:

You have 4 compulsory jumps that you want to put in the routine. Each of these moves takes 6 seconds to complete. You need 10 seconds for a spin. For a footwork combination, you think you will need 2 more seconds than is needed for a spin, for a footwork combination. You have 1 minute and 4 seconds for the entire piece.

  1. If you put in all these moves, how many extra seconds do you have?

    Jumps: 4 x 6 seconds = 24 seconds
    Spin: 10 seconds for spin
    Footwork: 2 seconds + 10 seconds = 12 seconds
    24 + 10 + 12 = 46 seconds

So far, you have 46 seconds of the piece accounted for.

    1 minute = 60 seconds
    60 seconds + 4 seconds = 64 seconds
    64 seconds - 46 seconds = 18 seconds

    You have 18 extra seconds.

  2. With this remaining time, how many more jumps could you put into the program?
    Number of extra jumps at 6 seconds each: 18 / 6 = 3
You have time for another 3 jumps in the routine.
