Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You recommend that he plow up the field.

This is the real-life decision that virologist Merritt Nelson would make.

"If you go into a field and you see that most of the crop is infected with a virus, you have to make the recommendation that you feel is correct," says Nelson. "Sometimes that means recommending that the farmer plow up the field."

There is no point growing an infected crop that will most likely fail. It is a potential hazard to other crops. "The farmers ask me my opinion," says Nelson. "I tell them what I know, but ultimately they have to make the decision about what to do about it."
