Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You recommend that he keep the crop.

You decide it would be devastating for the farmer to hear that his entire pumpkin crop is covered in a virus. Instead, you tell him that it is infected, but he may have a chance to get a pumpkin crop from it.

The farmer takes this as good news, and leaves the crop. In a few weeks, the virus spreads and begins to kill the plants. Now it is too late for the farmer to plow up the field and seed another crop. It is devastating indeed.

"We are asked for our opinion because we have a lot of years of experience," says Merritt Nelson, a virologist in Arizona. "The farmers want this opinion so that they can make their own informed decision."
