Real-Life Math -- Solution

You are a virologist studying the virus that causes dengue fever. Dengue fever is a tropical disease that causes acute aching in the joints.

1. How many of the 500,000 hospitalized people were children?

90 percent were children

Number = 500,000 x 0.9
Number = 450,000

You find that 450,000 of the people who were hospitalized with dengue fever were children under the age of 15.

2. How many of the 500,000 people died as a result of having dengue fever?

The mortality rate is 5 percent.

Dead = 500,000 x 0.05
Dead = 25,000

Your calculations indicate that 25,000 people died as a result of having dengue fever.
