You are the supervisor of a crew that installs manufactured homes. You and your crew are busy on an installation.

You encounter plenty of problems and annoyances. It is nobody's fault, but things are just going wrong. The weather is bad and the ground is muddy. The truck broke down. The neighbor's dog is running around the site and getting in the way. One of your crewmembers is not feeling well and is not as productive as usual. The battery died on your cellular phone and you cannot reach the head office. These are just a few of the things that are going wrong.

You are not in a good mood, to put it mildly.

The owner of the manufactured home shows up and asks you how things are going.

Which of these responses do you give?

  1. You grumble loudly to the owner. You explain everything that has gone wrong. You end it all by saying, "This is the worst set-up I have done all year."
  2. You smile pleasantly and tell the owner that there are a few problems that are slowing you down, but it is nothing you can't deal with. You suggest the owner speak to their neighbor about the dog, since the dog is at risk of being injured on the site.
  3. You smile, laugh and tell the owner that everything is perfect.
