Real-Life Communication -- Solution

Your best choice is number two. With this choice, you have reassured the owner, but at the same time alerted him that there are issues, including a possible injury to his neighbor's pet.

Number one will leave the owner feeling badly about the arrangement. He might take your complaints personally and report you to the employer. He might also think your complaints are a sign of your incompetence and lose faith in your ability to do the installation.

Number three is not truthful. If the home is not finished on schedule, the owner will be surprised, since you gave him no indication that everything was not going according to plan.

"You have two ears and one mouth. That's part of a grand plan. One of the great communication skills to learn is that you never have to explain what you don't say," says George Porter, an industry consultant and author. "There are times when the smartest thing you can do is keep [your] mouth shut, and other times when it's appropriate to speak up."
