Real-Life Communication -- Solution

Try saying something like this:

"I think your teeth could be a bit cleaner than they are, so I'm going to show you what to do at home, OK?

"I want you to make little circles when you brush your teeth. Make sure you can feel the toothbrush on your gums and remember to do the backs and the insides of your teeth, too. That's really important.

"I'm going to show you how to use dental floss, because you need to do this every day. Wrap the dental floss around your pointer fingers so it looks like a tightrope, then pull it between your teeth and slide it up and down between the teeth. Then move on to the next tooth.

"Remember, you have to do every tooth. This will help you keep those nice white teeth you have."

Get ready to explain this same message in a number of different ways if you want to be a dental hygienist.

"You have to be a good communicator, because you're giving instructions to all different kinds of people. If you make them clear, there's a better chance they'll actually follow them," says hygienist Nancy Bell.
