Real-Life Math -- Solution

Begin by figuring out what 75 percent of the fluoride mixture is, then figure out if it's too much for your patient.

75 percent = 0.75
0.75 x 200 u = 150 units

While it's unlikely she'll swallow this much, if the child manages to swallow 75 percent of this solution, she will have taken in as much as 150 units of fluoride solution. There is a risk of poisoning her, so you'll need to adjust the amount of fluoride.

Math is a part of this field on a daily basis.

"I use math all the time for periodontal readings [checking for periodontal disease]. I have to measure how deep the [tooth] pockets are and give a score. I do this by adding and dividing," says Mark Gilkey-Meisegeier, a dental hygienist in Wisconsin.
