Real-Life Math

The sun blazed all weekend. You filmed people playing volleyball on the beach. Most people loved the summer heat, but others are worried about its consequences.

The sudden warm temperatures caused rapid snow melt on the mountains, swelling the rivers flowing into the city. There is a potential for mass flooding. You and a reporter are sent out to capture this story.

Standing along the river's edge, you get the camera rolling for a 60-second story for the evening news.

"You use math to figure out timing," says April Butler, a camera operator. "You really have to know how to add and subtract in 30s and 60s, because the film speed is 30 frames per second and news stories are 30 and 60 seconds long."

  1. You want the reporter's stand-up to last 5 seconds during a 60-second news clip. If the film speed is 30 frames per second, how many frames will the stand-up take?

  2. If you want half of the news clip to be an interviewee explaining how to prepare for a flood, how many frames will this take?
