Real-Life Math -- Solution

You are a camera operator for a local TV station. You want to figure out how long to make each section of a news clip.

  1. You want the reporter's stand-up to last 5 seconds during a 60-second news clip. If the film speed is 30 frames per second, how many frames will the stand-up take?
    5 seconds x 30 frames per second = 150 frames

The stand-up will take 150 frames.

  2. If you want half of the news clip to be an interviewee explaining how to prepare for a flood, how many frames will this take?

    News clip = 60 seconds
    1/2 of news clip = 60 seconds x 1/2
    60 seconds x 1/2 = 30 seconds

    Frames: 30 frames per second
    30 seconds x 30 frames per second = 900 frames

The interviewee will talk for 900 frames.
