Orthodontic Assistant

Real-Life Activities

Real-Life Math

Orthodontic assistants do most of their work with patients, but their skills in all areas are called upon from time to time.

This morning, the orthodontist you work for wants to know approximately how long it will be before his practice has its 10,000th patient visit. He is planning a promotion with the local newspaper and needs to have a ballpark idea of when that visit will take place. (The lucky 10,000th person will get a prize, of course.)

You sit down to puzzle this one out. You know from the office records that in the 3 years that he's been in business, the doctor has already had 8,800 visits. So the question you face is how long it will take to get the rest of the way there.

If the doctor sees an average of 16 patients per day and has office hours 6 days per week, about how long will it be before lucky 10,000 comes through the door?
