Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You stop the blasting and find another way to see what is causing the explosions.

Finding out what was causing the fires would be tricky, but that's what engineers do: solve difficult problems. Today's technology makes it a little easier. Here's how Rogers found out what was causing the problem and corrected it.

"We developed a portable video camera enclosed in bulletproof glass to place underground and watch the blasts. It turned out that the explosives themselves were producing a lot of flames. With this information, we talked to our explosives supplier and tested new types of explosives that did not cause the trouble."

They double-checked the new explosives on videotape to be sure that there were no more flames and made a permanent switch to this explosive. They spent a little time to save much more time and money and came up with solution that made better sense.
