Real-Life Decision Making

You are mulling over a letter from a student in Taiwan who wishes to apply for graduate studies at your university. "Unfortunately, grading systems are different all over the world," says Sandy Ho, a university admissions officer.

In this case, the university in Taiwan only gives two grades for courses taken. "You either get a pass or a fail for a course," says Ho. "That kind of information doesn't help very much if you have a different standard for admitting people."

The student has assured you in the letter that she did very well at the university, and explains the research that she would like to continue in your country. You know that your university is interested in attracting students in this research area.

"But it's not fair to other students who work hard to get the grades to get into university to just let someone in without the proper credits," says Ho.

You have a decision to make.
