Real-Life Communication -- Solution

Since you and your family will be living at your new foreign post for at least a year, here is a prioritized list of concerns or questions they might have about this region and culture.

  1. How dangerous will this post be?
  2. What is the general feeling towards Americans in this region?
  3. How available are decent dwellings?
  4. What are the rules of etiquette in this culture? What will you need to know to get along?
  5. What kind of food is available?
  6. What type of natural disasters has this region experienced?
  7. What is the climate like?

Foreign service officers must be able to write and speak very well, says foreign service officer Sara Rosenberry.

Rosenberry says writing well is especially important because situations overseas often change very quickly. A foreign service officer must therefore, "be able to write precisely and concisely so people can get the essence of what's important," she says.

"We write not only to inform people but to request action -- what I want you to do and why it's important," Rosenberry adds. "And it only becomes more and more a priority as people's attention is pulled in so many directions."

Verbal skills are also essential, she says, "[S]o you can get up and talk to a group and hold their attention and get your point across."
