Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

Issue a warning

You decide it's best not to play favorites and moderate the forum with an even hand. You write a message to the member explaining why the posts are inappropriate.

You are friendly in your message and you don't quote any of the rules or regulations of the forum. You tell the member that you think he already knows that his posts are out of line. You ask him why he's behaving this way. If there is something going on with him, you'd like to know about it and be able to help if you can. The member responds to you and apologizes for acting out of order. He explains that he has been having a lot of trouble at school recently. He had a particularly bad day today and needed an outlet for his anger.

After a few exchanges, you and the member agree that his more insulting posts should be deleted from the forum. Once those posts are deleted you stop receiving angry messages from the other members.

"Don't be a faceless entity. You need a friendly team member to interact with users on a daily basis," says Nick Bouton. He designed and developed Protagonize.com, hosting and moderating the creative fiction writing community.
