Supervisor of Elections

Real-Life Communication

The election ended only a few days ago. It was an exciting event, but now there is more work to be done because you have another election to follow soon.

Part of preparing for an election is educating people about their right to vote, what that means to them and how to go about getting registered to vote. One of the best ways to educate people is to give them all of the information that they need on a handout.

Handouts work well because that gives voters the information they need in a form that they can take home. And that is what you're working on today -- a handout to educate potential voters. The handout you're putting together is a simple piece.

You'll include the fact that voting is a privilege that no one should overlook. Explain that voting is a simple process and all the potential voter needs to do is register to vote. To do that, they need to contact your office. Use this opportunity to build excitement about voting.

Also include a short description of the helpful poll workers that will be available to help them or to answer their questions on the day of the election. Keep your sentences short and simple. Remember that people tend to pick up information better when it is in small bites, as opposed to long sentences.
