Real-Life Math -- Solution

You want to determine the percentage of registered voters in your county and the percentage of those registered voters who are between the ages of 18 and 35. These numbers will help you to better design your voter registration campaign.

There are 10,700 people in your area who are eligible to vote. Of those people, 5,640 are registered to vote. And 3,050 of them are between the ages of 18 and 35.

First, you must determine what percentage of the eligible voters are registered to vote.

5,640 / 10,700 x 100 = 52.7 percent

About 53 percent of eligible voters are registered.

Find the percentage of registered voters who are between the ages of 18 and 35.

3,050 / 5,640 x 100 = 54

You know that 54 percent of registered voters are between the ages of 18 and 35.

"There is not a lot of math in what we do," says Janet Willwerth. She is an election supervisor. "What we do use is very low tech, mostly basic math -- addition and subtraction -- but nothing really advanced."
