Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You advise the family to leave the home until the mold problem has been remedied.

This is the real-life decision that Mark Sneller would make. Sneller is a microbiologist and mold consultant.

"Generally, you play it safe," he says. "You have to make responsible decisions. There are a lot of different reasons why."

He says that insurance payments and legal issues may come up in the decision. "Legal issues are only one of the reasons," he says. "You have to rely on your sampling and understand the results. You have to think about the health of the people concerned."

Sneller says that mold consultants have to make many other decisions as they inspect the house.

"You need to decide if you have to tear down a wall, or whether you can compromise by drilling inspection holes," he says. "Many decisions have to be made."
