Real-Life Decision Making

Phlebotomists often come in contact with patients who are receiving extensive medical care. Some patients require blood tests every day in order to track the progress of their treatments.

In other cases, a blood sample might be drawn from a patient who otherwise shies away from medical attention.

That's the case this morning. Your first patient is Mrs. Green. She is an elderly woman who has come to the hospital for a yearly blood test. A rare form of tuberculosis is prevalent in her family. She is tested each year for presence of the disease.

You find her in the waiting room, anxious and eager to go home. You take her into an exam room and prepare to draw the blood samples called for on the lab slip.

But when you try to roll up her sleeve, she resists. Only when you explain that you need to take blood does she relent. And then you see the marks on her arms.

You can't be sure, but you suspect the marks are from restraints. You know that elder abuse is an all-too-common problem, but you aren't sure what to do.

You finish taking the blood, then duck into an empty room to consider your options.

What do you do?
