Real-Life Communication -- Solution

Here's what you could say:

"Good morning. I want to ask you a favor. Close your eyes and imagine, if you will, the following smells. I know, it's not easy, but try.

"Ready? How about hot apple pie? Or a pine forest after a spring rain?

"Ah, just as I thought. OK, open your eyes. Many of you were smiling as I said those words and the reason is that aromas are powerful. Did you know that certain elements, such as balsam oil and cinnamon extract, release molecules that stimulate the part of your brain that affects how you feel?

"That's the whole idea behind aromatherapy. While these ideas may be new to you, keep in mind that people have been using aromas to make them feel better for thousands of years. But today's aromatherapy is more advanced than ever. Every year, we discover new extracts that provide a new benefit.

"You have the chance to explore many wonderful treatments here today. Each one offers its own benefits and each one will, no doubt, leave you feeling energized and refreshed.

"But keep this in mind. The benefits of aromatherapy can be enjoyed almost anywhere and any time. Some of my clients take small samples of aromas with them on the train to work. They say it helps them get ready to face the day. Others keep the scents active in their homes and say that friends remark about how relaxed they feel when they visit.

"I have much more information about aromatherapy I'd love to share with you. If you're interested, just track me down. All you have to do to find me is follow the good smells. Thank you!"

Beverley von Marksfeld-Fuhrherr owns an aromatherapy institute. According to Marksfeld-Fuhrherr, aromatherapists use communication tactics to find out what's going on in their clients' lives. "You need to be able to communicate and you need good listening skills....When someone comes in, you have a client interview, you chat to the person and find out why they are coming to you."
