Real-Life Math -- Solution

Since you know the original recipe makes 70 ounces and that you need 17.5 ounces, you need to figure out portions:

70 ounces / 17.5 ounces = 4 ounces

You have to reduce the recipe by one-quarter to get the right amount. The new amounts are:

17.5 / 4 = 4.4 ounces vanilla bean oil
8.7 / 4 = 2.2 ounces balsam oil
17.5 / 4 = 4.4 ounces oil of eucalyptus
3.5 / 4 = 0.9 ounces coconut oil
3.5 / 4 = 0.9 ounces of carrot seed extract
2 / 4 = 0.5 ounces citronella extract

As an aromatherapist, it's important to be comfortable with conversions and mixtures.

"You need to have a good dilution," says aromatherapist Beverley von Marksfeld-Fuhrherr. "You don't just put in as many drops as you feel like. The essential oils have very powerful chemical components in them, so they need to be handled with respect."
