"Often, not enough identifying characteristics can be found in a deteriorated skeleton in order to make an identification," says Stefan Schmitt.

"In this case, the family member is left with doubt, possibly for the rest of their lives. This is very painful, but as a forensic anthropologist working in human rights, this is not uncommon."

You may feel you are helping the family, but it is their right to know that this skeleton may or may not be their father. They must know the truth: their search is not over.
