A potential client approaches you. He has just finished a manuscript and now wants to publish it as a book. He asks you how much it will cost to lay out the entire content -- some 50,000 words and 12 drawings. He also wants you to design the back cover.

You say it depends on a number of factors. You ask him for a copy of the manuscript so that you can look at it. You say you will write him a letter with a price quote the following day.

Here is what you find:

The manuscript is generally complete. It includes the front matter (introduction, dedication) and the back matter (author information and bibliography). So you don't need to worry about that.

But there are some problems with the main text. It has some typos and punctuation mistakes. The spacing between sentences is also inconsistent. Some sentences have a space between them. Others do not. Fixing this will take extra time, and you will have to charge your client for it. You will also have to reformat the text.

After looking over the manuscript and making notes about it, you sit down to write a quote.

Here is what you have to tell him:

  • Laying out the content and designing the back cover will take about 20 hours.
  • Making final changes and proofing the manuscript will take another five hours.
  • The base cost of the project is $1,000. But it may change.
  • You will reformat the text as part of your hourly charge. You will also correct the typos and the spacing between sentences wherever necessary as part of your hourly charge -- but only to a certain point.
  • You can start the project next Monday morning and complete it by Thursday afternoon.
  • The first 50 corrections are free. But you will charge an extra dollar for each additional correction you have to make. The cost of these additional corrections will be added to the total hourly costs.
  • You define a correction as something that forces you to change, add or delete a word, phrase or punctuation mark in one line of text.
  • You will not work on the front cover because your client did not ask you to design it.

Compose a letter that includes all this information.
