Real-Life Math

You are a special education teacher. You have to be able to explain a lot of different math concepts to special needs students. Today you are working with a Grade 12 student. You are going to focus on solving an algebraic equation.

Linda Underwood works as a teacher of special education. "As a support teacher, I provide step-by-step instructions to students who are unclear about math concepts. I must be sure of these concepts myself and able to explain the 'whys' of mathematical operations."

Algebraic equations are shown in their simplest form, but in order to come up with the answer you must be able to solve them. The student you are working with is at a Grade 9 level, so she is familiar with algebra. This equation is a little more advanced than she is used to, so you must be able to show how you worked through it in detail.

Here is the equation:

(a-b)2= c

Help the student solve the equation if a = 3 and b = 2.

Remember that this student will need to see how you got to the answer by showing each step in as much detail as possible.
