Real-Life Communication -- Solution

Here's a sample outline:

Executive Summary:

The government requires maps of the 60 acres of territory referred to in RFP AC87 as the Wild 'n' Wet Project.

Ace Photogrammetrics proposes to produce and deliver these maps to the government within the timeframe and budget stipulated by RFP AC87.

In the first phase of the project, subcontractor Aerial Images will take the photographs using color film. Delivery will be as photo enlargements. This phase of the project will take six weeks from the date of commencement.

In the second phase, the ground coordinates will be plotted. This will be an in-house task and will require three weeks.

In the third phase, the photographs will be digitized and manipulated so as to remove distortions that occur in traditional film. This will be done in-house and will take 10 days.

The budget, including taxes, is $12,417.

Procurement:

The aerial photographs will be taken and developed by Aerial Images, a well-known local business with a reputation for doing high-quality work. Aerial Images will take the photographs from a height of 1,000 feet and will fly in clear, sunny conditions to assure best exposure. Color film will be used and will be delivered as photo enlargements. The estimated date of completion is six weeks after the project commences.

Ground Control:

Known points on the ground will be measured so as to translate the aerial photographs into ground coordinates. This will be performed in-house and will be charged at a flat rate of $40 per acre. The estimated date of completion is three weeks after receiving the aerial photographs from Aerial Images.

Digitization:

Images will be digizited (converted to computer format) since distortions can be corrected by computer. The resulting images will be much more accurate. This component will cost $560 and will take 10 days to complete, following the entering of ground coordinates on to the map.

Budget:

Aerial Photography$7,500
Ground Control$2,400
Digitization$650
Subtotal$10,550
10% Profit Markup$1,055
Subtotal$11,605
Tax$812
Grand Total$12,417

"More time is spent in communication than in doing calculations," says Thomas Asbeck. "I gave a talk at the North Dakota State University at a meeting of civil engineers. The professor asked me what courses they should be stressing, and I said English."
