Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You take shortcuts and finish the map according to deadline.

The supervisor is clearly pleased and tells you that you are fitting in very well.

However, the map was being produced for a government agency that performed an integrity check on the data. They discovered that the information on the map didn't coincide with what was actually on the ground.

Since the data didn't meet specifications, they complained to your employer. Now your employer has to do the map over again and will lose money on the deal. Your supervisor is very angry with you and warns you never to do that again. When your probationary period ends, your probation is extended for another three months and your supervisor watches you very carefully.

"This work requires someone who is ethical and who will do the job properly and not take shortcuts," says Ken Sherman, a geomatics instructor. "I tell the students that eventually someone who does take the shortcuts gets found out. You might get away with it for a while, but eventually what goes around comes around and you get caught."
