Introduction

Manufacturing Career Cluster Video

Planning, managing and performing the processing of materials into intermediate or final products, including related professional and technical support activities such as production planning and control, maintenance and manufacturing/process engineering.

Employment Outlook

Careers in this cluster fall into the production; installation, maintenance, and repair; and architecture and engineering occupational groups used by the Bureau of Labor Statistics for occupational projections.

Production

Overall employment in production occupations is projected to decline 2 percent from 2021 to 2031, resulting in a decrease of about 163,600 jobs over the decade. About 989,900 openings each year, on average, are projected to come from replacement needs.

Installation, Maintenance, and Repair

Overall employment in installation, maintenance, and repair occupations is projected to grow 5 percent from 2021 to 2031, about as fast as the average for all occupations; this increase is expected to result in about 304,000 new jobs over the decade. In addition to new jobs from growth, opportunities arise from the need to replace workers who leave their occupations permanently. About 628,200 openings each year, on average, are projected to come from growth and replacement needs.

Architecture and Engineering

Overall employment in architecture and engineering occupations is projected to grow 4 percent from 2021 to 2031, about as fast as the average for all occupations; this increase is expected to result in about 91,300 new jobs over the decade. About 200,900 openings each year, on average, are projected to come from growth and replacement needs.
