Real-Life Math

Football players keep track of many statistics. To figure out how well they play, they need to know things such as their percentage of completed passes and their yardage.

"You need math skills to some degree to be a football player," says Eric Stansfield. He is director of football information for a professional football team. "You don't do calculus or anything like that, but in every job you do have to do math. We calculate yardage and that kind of thing when we play."

Look at some fictional statistics for 4 NFL quarterbacks. You will see their total yardage, and the number of games played. From these stats, you can figure out the average number of yards that each quarterback gained per game.

Lamar Jackson:
16 games
Yardage: 4,212 yards

Patrick Mahomes:
16 games
Yardage: 3,497 yards

Jalen Hurts:
13 games
Yardage: 2,711 yards

Aaron Rodgers:
12 games
Yardage: 2,178 yards

  1. What is Lamar Jackson's average number of yards per game?
  2. What is Patrick Mahomes' average number of yards per game?
  3. Does Jalen Hurts have a better yards-per-game average than Aaron Rodgers?
