Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You agree to release Mark before his results come back.

Mark has rights. He has won his freedom until his trial date, and it isn't fair to hold him in jail waiting for tests to be returned.

"You have to think about all kinds of things," says Mimi Fields. She is a medical officer. "You don't want to infringe on the rights of the individual if you don't have to."

But you may want to think about what could happen if you release Mark into the community without obtaining his results. If he does have TB, he could potentially infect hundreds of people in the community with the disease.

"First, we think about protecting the public. And sometimes that means infringing on the rights of an individual," says Fields.
