Public health directors have university degrees related to public health. Health officers are generally trained as physicians.

"The requirements vary from state to state," says John Lumpkin. He is a director of public health in Illinois. "In Illinois, the director of public health must be a physician. Nationally, the lead public health official is a physician in about 60 percent of the states. In others, the lead person has an advanced degree in public health."
