Real-Life Math -- Solution

You are giving Fern the first stage in a treatment against rabies. You must be careful to administer the correct amount of HRIG. Giving too much can affect the immune response to the rabies vaccine.

How many IUs will Fern need?

You need 9 IUs per pound. Fern weighs 120 pounds.

IUs = 9 IUs per pound x 120 pounds
IUs = 1,080

Fern will need 1,080 IUs of HRIG.

If the HRIG comes in vials that contain 216 IUs each, how many vials will you need to treat Fern?

Vials = 1,080 IUs / 216 IUs per vial
Vials = 5

Fern will need to be treated with 5 vials of HRIG before receiving the rabies vaccine.

"Math is important," says John Lumpkin. He is a public health director. "The fundamental basis of public health is epidemiology, the study of cause and spread of disease. It is based in biostatistics and uses statistical analysis to confirm hypothesis about the cause of illness."
