Real-Life Decision Making

The wind has been raging for the past few days, which means that you have been unable to lift off and spray a farmer's cornfields with pesticide. Crop sprayers can't spray in windy conditions because pesticides, seed or fertilizers can blow into neighboring fields and communities.

"You can cause a lot of damage if the chemicals spread into other areas," says Donald Wander, a crop sprayer.

You are keen to spray the field because every day that you sit on the ground, you are losing money. You are also losing other jobs.

This wind has been really holding you back. But luckily, today there has been a break in the weather.

Your plane is loaded and ready to spread pesticide over the fields. Just before takeoff, you check the wind speed again and find that it's 14 knots. "Federal law says that you can't spray in wind conditions over 10 knots, but it's just a little over," says Wander.

What do you do?
