Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You decide to ground the helicopters.

This is the real-life decision made by Tom Seagrave, an aviation maintenance technician. "It was the hardest decision I've ever had to make on the job," says Seagrave.

The problem wasn't with the difficulty of repairing the helicopters -- the crew could do it. The problem was with management. "I had to deal with irate management," says Seagrave. "I'm sure you can understand. These aircraft can earn up to $4,000 an hour." And management always has economic concerns that take priority.

But safety always comes first, and the company management, although angry, understood Seagrave's position. They also admitted it was their mistake to not have an engineer on the shift.

Getting the maintenance technicians might have been the right thing to do economically, but in terms of safety, it was a definite no-no.
