Real-Life Math

One of the most common ways judges use math involves sentencing convicted criminals to jail time. Today, you're scheduled to sentence a man convicted of armed robbery. It's his 2nd offense.

You refer to the sentencing guidelines. For a 2nd offense of armed robbery, 12 years in prison is standard. However, some other factors may change how you rule today. First, more than 15 years have elapsed between his original offense and the 2nd offense. Using the guidelines, you decide on a 20 percent reduction in the total sentence.

Also, the prisoner has already served 180 days while awaiting the trial, which was delayed due to technicalities. Now you're prepared to head into the courtroom and issue your sentence. How long will you order him to serve? Be ready to deliver the sentence in years, months and days.
