Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You leave the unit as is.

You are new to this job and you don't want to make too many waves. You trim a little from some of the larger departments to help keep the hospital on budget and hope for the best.

Two years later, the insurance companies cut coverage for drug addiction therapy and mental disorders. To keep the unit afloat, you cut deeply from other departments to cover its mounting losses.

Other hospitals are closing their units and their patients are coming to you. Your hospital is now the only mental health and substance abuse center. There would be a public outcry if you closed it now, but it still isn't running profitably and the rest of the hospital is suffering.

Two years later, the unit is still open and not making money. You're on stress leave.

Diane Lemon is a hospital administrator. She says decision-making skills are critical. "In this time of financial need, decision making is critical and people are hired for good decision-making skills," she says.
