Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You pick the short-distance club and play it safe.

This decision will add an extra stroke to your player's score. But if she hits into the water, she will receive penalties and the situation could be even worse.

As a caddy, you have to judge the shot and the player. "You must know your player's strengths and weaknesses well enough to make an informed decision on the spot. If a player isn't confident in the decision, she will most likely ask the caddy. You must be ready to respond and be confident in your assessment of the situation," says Amy Lillibridge, a caddy who has worked on the LPGA tour.

Sue makes the easy shot, which adds an extra stroke to her score. She gains confidence and plays well through the rest of the holes. But in the end she is beaten by one stroke. She didn't win the tournament and she's bitterly disappointed.

"Each hole, you must select a club to tee off with depending on the golf course and the weather conditions," says Dennis College, a caddy in the LPGA. "You must select clubs on every approach shot. That can be between 25 and 30 club selections in a round."

You're bound to make a wrong decision at some point, but the very best caddies strive to always make the right decision for their golfers.
