Real-Life Communication

Most good communicators have a secret skill: they are great listeners. When you work in any customer service capacity, good communication skills are extremely important.

"Communication is a big part of our job. We need to be able to listen to our customer and translate their needs to our abilities of job performance," says Laura Nadin-Young. She is a reservation and customer service trainer for an airline.

By truly listening to the passengers you help, your job will be more enjoyable.

Practice working as an airline ticket agent at the check-in counter. Keep a conversation going while the computer searches for specific flight information and processes a reservation.

Partner with a friend or classmate to act as the passenger. Try to keep a conversation going for as long as possible, then reverse roles.

Your partner should begin by asking a question. You must answer the question, then ask another related question.
