Insider Info

Additional Information

Airlines have age requirements for airline ticket agents. The minimum is usually 18 to 20 years old. A high school diploma is also a minimum requirement for most airlines.

A certificate or college degree is not necessary to become an airline ticket agent. Most employers provide on-the-job training, especially on the computers and specific airline policies.

Many training courses are available, however. They provide experience and, in some cases, internships with a certificate upon completion of the course. Such certificates improve your credentials when seeking employment.

Attending travel college or receiving training in either tourism or the travel trade puts future airline ticket agents at an advantage.

"The pay [as an airline ticket agent] is better than I could get in any other field," says Brooks Hester. "I do not have a college degree, but I do have a high school diploma."
