Real-Life Decision Making

Interacting with people can be a very enjoyable part of working as an airline ticket agent. It can also be one of the most frustrating parts of the job.

"It makes me feel good to genuinely help people," says Brooks Hester. He is a station agent for an airline.

"I love to make people laugh and try to make every passenger I face chortle or at least smile. Usually this comes about from people's driver license pictures. Everyone hates how those turn out."

To be successful serving customers, an airline ticket agent needs to listen carefully.

By being aware of the situation (flights have been delayed due to weather) and listening carefully to what the passenger is saying (they need to be on that cancelled flight), you read between the lines. You figure out that they need a hotel because they are not about to sleep at the airport.

Once you learn what the real problem is, you are able to help them solve their problem.

It is important to remain courteous, even when passengers become angry or frustrated that they have misunderstood an airline rule or not followed directions properly.

You are working for an airline. A couple wishes to ship their 200-pound dog in a giant kennel. The problem is their flight is on a smaller aircraft (an MD88) and the kennel needed for this dog doesn't fit in the cargo area.

What do you do?
