Real-Life Decision Making

It's exam time at Delta College, and many students are feeling great pressure. Unfortunately, they aren't the only ones.

Early in the morning, you are called to the university boiler room. The operator had to shut down the steam heating system. Because the boiler is needed to heat the university, the operator wants to begin fixing the faulty valves immediately.

Before she can get permission to fix the valves, she needs the OK of a boiler inspector. You would like to let her, but first you need to make sure that it is safe to proceed. "Can't we just start fixing right away?" she asks desperately.

It will probably be fine to begin fixing the boiler, but you are a bit unsure about a particular valve. A boiler is a closed vessel operating under pressure, so there are many potential dangers.

What do you do?
